Wood Stove and Insert Service in Rockford, IL

Updated

Short answer

A wood stove or insert needs a sweep and a yearly check, plus a permit and the right flue if you install one. Angi puts a stove sweep at $150 to $300 and installation at $1,500 to $4,000, national figures with no Rockford price.

Stoves, inserts and pellet stoves

A freestanding wood stove sits on a hearth pad and connects to a chimney with stovepipe. An insert slides into an existing masonry fireplace and is usually vented up the chimney through a liner. A pellet stove burns compressed pellets and vents through a small pipe, often out the wall. All three produce smoke and ash, and all three need a clean, sound vent. This page covers sweeping and installing them. Open fireplaces are covered on fireplace repair and gas units on gas fireplace service.

Sweeping a stove or insert

A stove burns hotter than an open fireplace and its flue is smaller, so creosote can build quickly. A sweep removes it from the pipe, the flue and the smoke shelf. The steps for a stove are:

  1. Drop cloths go down and the stove is shut cold.
  2. The stovepipe is taken apart if needed, and the baffle or a removable plate is lifted to reach the top of the firebox.
  3. The flue is brushed from the top or the bottom with a brush sized for the liner.
  4. The stove interior, the baffle, the gasket and the glass are cleaned and checked.
  5. The pipe goes back together. Joints and screws should be tight, and the pipe should clear anything that burns.
  6. The technician writes down the creosote stage. See creosote removal.

An insert sweep may need the insert pulled forward, because the liner connects at the back. Not every sweep does this, so ask. A pellet stove needs its vent, ash traps and exhaust fan cleaned as well. A yearly inspection is also worth getting, because a stove sends more heat up a liner than an open fireplace does.

What drives the price

Typical price, national

No cost guide publishes a Rockford, Chicago or Illinois chimney price (Angi's Chicago pages return 404, and HomeGuide and Thumbtack have none), so every range on this site is a national figure and is labelled that way.

Angi, chimney sweep cost (updated July 10, 2026) puts a wood stove sweep at $150 to $300 and pellet stove cleaning at $130 to $200. HomeGuide, chimney sweep cost (updated February 9, 2026) gives $130 to $300 for a wood or pellet stove and vent. Installation is bigger: Angi, wood stove installation cost (updated October 19, 2026) says $1,500 to $4,000, averaging $3,000, and puts permits at $50 to $250. HomeGuide, wood stove installation cost (updated February 1, 2026) gives $3,000 to $8,000, with a masonry-chimney install at $4,000 to $8,000. The stove, the liner, the hearth pad, the pipe and the labor all add up. The cost page lists the rest.

Installing a stove or insert

A new stove needs more than a place to put it. Plan for these:

  • Certification. New wood stoves must meet the EPA's Step 2 smoke limit, in force since May 15, 2020.
  • A flue that fits. The flue has to match the stove's outlet. Most masonry chimneys get a stainless liner. See liner installation.
  • Clearances. A stove needs set distances to walls and ceilings, and a non-combustible hearth pad.
  • A permit. See below.
  • A carbon monoxide alarm. Check Illinois rules; the law covers homes with fossil fuel appliances or an attached garage, and a wood stove alone is not named.

EPA wood stove standard

“Step 2 took effect on May 15, 2020, when the standard was lowered to 2.0 g/h. Heaters using the optional cord wood test method must meet a standard of 2.5 g/h.”
EPA Burn Wise, choosing the right wood stove.

The EPA certified wood stoves guide explains how to read the label.

Pellet stove vents

A pellet stove vents through a small pipe, often straight out an outside wall rather than up a chimney. The pipe, the exhaust fan and the ash traps all collect residue. A sweep of a pellet stove covers them, which is why Angi lists pellet stove cleaning on its own line. A pellet stove also needs power, so a stove that will not run in an outage is not a backup heat source unless it has a battery supply.

Permits in Rockford and Winnebago County

In Rockford, installing or replacing a heating appliance needs a mechanical permit, so a wood stove, an insert or a gas insert is permitted work. The city FAQ says an owner may do mechanical work in their own single-family home. Loves Park lists mechanical work among the work that needs a permit. In the unincorporated county and in the towns the Building Division serves, call the office at (815) 319-4350 before a stove or insert install. Chimney work itself is not named either way.

Rockford's Property Standards say a fireplace or wood-burning appliance cannot be a building's primary heat source. A stove can be a supplement, not the only heat. Rockton's code expressly allows burning wood in domestic fireplaces as long as no garbage is burned. For outdoor fires the rules vary by town; the outdoor burning rules guide lists each one.

Wood heat in a gas county

Winnebago County is mostly gas. 83.5% of county homes heat with it (Census ACS 5-year), and only 169 heat with wood. A stove here is usually a supplement or a mood: a few nights in January, when Rockford averages 21.8 F and has 6,497 heating degree days a year (National Weather Service, 1991 to 2020 normals). Light use still builds creosote, mostly when wet wood or a damped-down fire is the cause.

Firewood and burning habits

The EPA says wood burns best at a moisture content under 20 percent. Test it with a moisture meter. Season wood at least six months, keep it off the ground and cover only the top. Never burn garbage, plastic or pressure-treated wood. Illinois lifted its interior emerald ash borer quarantine, but Illinois Extension and USDA still say to buy firewood where you burn it. EPA stopped updating Burn Wise in October 2025 and keeps it as a historic record. See the firewood guide.

Care of a stove in use

  • Check the stovepipe and the creosote through the season, not only once a year. Heavy use means more checks.
  • Empty ashes into a metal container with a lid and keep it outside, at least 10 feet from the house, per the U.S. Fire Administration.
  • Check the door gasket and glass. A leaking gasket lets the fire run too hot or too cool.
  • Burn hot fires. A fire damped to a smolder overnight makes more creosote.
  • Keep a carbon monoxide alarm within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping, as Illinois law requires for homes with fossil fuel appliances or an attached garage.

Stove, insert or pellet stove

A freestanding stove warms the room it sits in and needs floor space, a hearth pad and clearances. An insert uses the fireplace opening you already have and pushes more of the heat into the room than an open fire, but needs a liner. A pellet stove burns a bagged fuel with a fan and a small vent, and it needs power. The liner page covers the vent for an insert. Prices differ: Angi lists stove sweeps at $150 to $300and pellet stove cleaning at $130 to $200.

Moving into a house with a stove

If the house has a stove or insert, do not assume it is safe. Ask for the install paperwork and any permit. Look for a hearth pad and clearances. Have the chimney inspected, and ask for a Level 2 if you do not know its history, since CSIA recommends one when a property is sold. A stove installed without a permit or with the wrong flue is the sort of problem a buyer inherits. See chimney inspection.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Do you pull an insert to clean it, or sweep it from the top?
  • For an install: is the stove EPA certified, and what size liner and hearth pad does it need?
  • Who pulls the permit, and what does it cost?
  • Does the quote include the liner, the pipe, the pad and the cap?
  • What clearances will the stove have to walls and ceilings?

Common questions

Wood Stove, Insert and Pellet Stove Service: questions

How much does a wood stove sweep cost?

Angi puts a wood stove sweep at $150 to $300 and pellet stove cleaning at $130 to $200. These are national figures with no Rockford price. The cost page lists the other chimney jobs.

How much does it cost to install a wood stove?

Angi puts wood stove installation at $1,500 to $4,000, averaging $3,000, with permits extra. HomeGuide gives a higher range that includes the stove and an existing masonry chimney. These are national figures. See the cost page.

How often should a wood stove or insert be swept?

At least once a year, and more often with heavy use. The U.S. Fire Administration advises a yearly professional inspection and cleaning. Stoves burn hotter than open fireplaces, so creosote can build fast, especially with wet wood or a damped-down fire.

Do I need a permit to install a wood stove in Rockford?

Installing or replacing a heating appliance needs a mechanical permit in Rockford, so a stove or an insert is permitted work. Loves Park also lists mechanical work among its permitted work. In the unincorporated county, call the Building Division first.

Can I use a wood stove as my main heat in Rockford?

Rockford's Property Standards say a fireplace or wood-burning appliance cannot be a building's primary heat source. A stove can add heat, but another heating system has to be the primary one.

What is an EPA-certified wood stove?

It is a stove that meets the EPA's smoke limits. Step 2, in force since May 15, 2020, caps new stoves at 2.0 grams an hour, or 2.5 under the optional cord wood test. The certification label is on the stove. The EPA certified wood stoves guide explains it.

Does a wood stove insert need a chimney liner?

Most inserts connect to a stainless liner run up the existing flue, so the exhaust is sized to the stove and sealed from the masonry. A camera inspection confirms what the chimney needs before the insert goes in.

What kind of wood should I burn in a stove?

Dry hardwood, seasoned at least six months and tested with a moisture meter, since EPA says wood burns best under 20 percent moisture. Never burn garbage, plastic or pressure-treated wood. Illinois Extension advises buying firewood where you burn it.
