Gas Fireplace Service in Rockford, IL
Updated
Short answer

What a gas fireplace service covers
A gas fireplace has no soot to sweep, which is why owners skip it. It still has parts that wear, collect dust and fail, and it burns a fuel that makes carbon monoxide when something goes wrong. A service visit covers the whole appliance and its vent.
- Burner and logs. The burner ports are cleaned, the log set is checked for position and for soot, because misplaced logs are a common cause of a sooty flame.
- Pilot and ignition. The pilot assembly, thermocouple or ignition module is tested and cleaned.
- Gas connection. The valve and the line to the appliance are checked for leaks.
- Glass. On a glass-front unit the glass is cleaned and the gasket is checked.
- Blower and controls. Fans, switches and the remote or thermostat are tested.
- Venting. The vent or flue is checked for blockage, damage and a good connection. For a unit that vents into a chimney, that means the chimney.
Types of gas fireplace
Gas logs in a masonry fireplace
A gas log set sits in an old wood-burning firebox and uses the existing chimney. The chimney still needs a look. It can be damaged, blocked or the wrong size, and the damper is typically fixed open. See chimney inspection.
Gas insert
An insert is a sealed unit that slides into a masonry fireplace and usually vents through a liner. The liner needs checking too. See liner installation.
Built-in gas fireplace
A built-in unit comes with its own venting. Many are direct vent, with one pipe for exhaust and one for outside air through a wall or roof. The vent termination outside needs to be clear of snow, nests and debris.
Signs a gas fireplace needs service now
- The flame is yellow or orange and sooty. Nicor says that can mean poor combustion or venting.
- The pilot will not stay lit, or the fireplace will not start.
- You smell gas. Leave the house and call Nicor or 911 from outside; do not use light switches or a phone indoors.
- The glass is clouded with a film that returns quickly.
- Soot stains appear on the logs, the glass or the wall above the fireplace.
- The carbon monoxide alarm sounds, or someone has a headache or nausea only when the fireplace is on.
Nicor and the yearly service
What Nicor Gas, the local gas utility, says
“Keep your natural gas appliances and equipment maintained and in good working order by having them cleaned and/or inspected for safety once a year by a certified natural gas contractor/HVAC technician.”
The Consumer Product Safety Commission goes further and names fireplaces, furnaces, water heaters, chimneys, flues and vents in its call for a yearly professional inspection of fuel-burning equipment. The gas fireplace cleaning guide goes through what cleaning means for a gas unit.
What gas fireplace service costs
Typical price, national
- Gas fireplace service: $80 to $130. Angi, chimney sweep cost, updated July 10, 2026.
- Gas fireplace chimney cleaning: $80 to $150. HomeGuide, chimney sweep cost, updated February 9, 2026.
Angi's repair guide gives $75 to $125 for an annual fireplace inspection. No guide we reviewed prices gas fireplace repair parts, so repairs are quoted after a diagnosis. No cost guide publishes a Rockford, Chicago or Illinois chimney price (Angi's Chicago pages return 404, and HomeGuide and Thumbtack have none), so every range on this site is a national figure and is labelled that way.
Angi, chimney sweep cost (updated July 10, 2026) puts gas fireplace maintenance at $80 to $130. HomeGuide, chimney sweep cost (updated February 9, 2026) says $80 to $150 for gas fireplace chimney cleaning. The price rises when the visit includes a chimney or liner check, a new thermocouple or valve, or a unit that is hard to reach. The cost page lists the other chimney jobs.
Why gas matters in Rockford
Winnebago County is a gas county: 83.5% of homes heat with it (Census ACS 5-year), and in Rockford it is 82.4%. A gas fireplace or a gas insert is a common upgrade for a house that already has the gas line. Rockford's median home was built in 1963, and 22.4% of its housing units date from before 1940, so many gas fireplaces are fitted into old masonry. That makes the chimney part of the service call. Rockford averages 21.8 F in January and 6,497 heating degree days a year (National Weather Service, 1991 to 2020 normals), so these units run hard in winter and sit for months in summer.
In Rockford, installing or replacing a heating appliance needs a mechanical permit, which includes a gas insert. Loves Park says permits are needed for mechanical work as well. Servicing an existing unit is not an installation, but a replacement is. Ask the building office first. In unincorporated areas, call the Winnebago County Building Division.
Book the visit in early fall, before the heating season. The service is quicker than a repair in January, when Rockford averages 21.8 F and the unit is in daily use. A technician who finds a worn part in October can order it. One who finds it in a cold snap may be waiting on a supplier. If you rent the home out, schedule the visit between tenants.
Carbon monoxide
Illinois requires at least one carbon monoxide alarm within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping in homes that burn fossil fuel to cook, heat or make hot water, natural gas included, or that have an attached garage. A yearly service is the way to keep the appliance from making the gas the alarm detects. The alarm law guide explains placement, battery and landlord duties.
What you can do between visits
- Keep the area around the unit clear of cushions, paper, curtains and anything that can burn.
- Wipe the glass when the unit is cool and off. Do not use harsh cleaners that are not made for fireplace glass.
- Test your carbon monoxide alarm each month and replace its battery as the maker advises.
- Keep outside vents, if the unit has them, clear of snow, leaves and nests.
- Never block the vent or the air intake, and never use the unit with a cracked glass front.
Do not adjust the gas line, valve or pilot assembly yourself. Nicor says to use a certified natural gas contractor or HVAC technician for cleaning and inspection.
Gas logs in an old wood fireplace
Many Rockford homes have a masonry fireplace that was converted to gas logs. The chimney is a vent, and it has to stay open and sound. A damper that has been left closed on a gas log set sends exhaust into the room, which is why that damper is usually fixed open. If you are unsure how yours is set, ask at the service visit. Also ask whether the flue has been inspected since the logs went in. Old chimneys with gas logs can still have cracked tile, nests and rust.
Rental properties
Illinois puts alarm duties on both sides. The owner supplies and installs the carbon monoxide alarms. The tenant tests them, replaces the batteries and reports problems in writing. A landlord with a gas fireplace in a unit should have the unit and its vent serviced yearly, and a tenant who smells gas or sees soot should say so in writing and not wait.
When the unit needs a repair, not a service
A service finds problems. A repair fixes them: a failed thermocouple, a bad valve, a cracked glass or a corroded vent. No guide we reviewed prices gas fireplace parts, and the cost depends on the make and the age. Ask for the part and the labor on the quote, and whether the part is still made. A very old unit may cost more to fix than to replace, and a replacement is permitted work in Rockford.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Do you work on my make and type of gas fireplace? Do you check the vent and the chimney too?
- Is the price for the burner and glass visit only, or the vent as well?
- How will you check for a gas leak?
- Will I get a written list of what you found and what needs replacing?
- If a part is needed, do you quote the price before you order it?
Tell us the make of the unit, if you know it, and what it is doing. We reply with a price first.

Common questions
Gas Fireplace Service: questions
How much does gas fireplace service cost?
Angi puts gas fireplace maintenance at $80 to $130. HomeGuide gives a similar range for gas fireplace chimney cleaning. These are national figures with no Rockford price. The cost page lists the other chimney jobs.
Does a gas fireplace need to be cleaned every year?
Nicor Gas advises a yearly cleaning or inspection of gas appliances by a certified contractor, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission advises a yearly inspection of fireplaces, chimneys, flues and vents. A gas unit has no soot to sweep, but dust, pilot problems and vent blockages are real.
Why is my gas fireplace flame yellow or orange?
Nicor Gas says a yellow or orange flame can mean poor combustion or venting. Misplaced logs, dust in the burner or a partly blocked vent are common causes. Turn the unit off and have it checked, especially if the alarm has sounded.
What is the difference between gas logs, a gas insert and a gas fireplace?
Gas logs sit in a masonry fireplace and use its chimney. An insert is a sealed unit slid into a masonry opening, usually vented through a liner. A built-in gas fireplace comes with its own venting, often direct vent through a wall or roof.
Does a gas fireplace need a chimney inspection?
When it vents into a masonry chimney, it does. Gas exhaust is cooler and wetter than wood smoke and can damage an old flue, and nests or debris can block it. A Level 1 or a camera scan checks the vent along with the appliance.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm with a gas fireplace in Illinois?
Illinois requires an alarm within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping in homes that burn fossil fuel to cook, heat or make hot water, or that have an attached garage. Natural gas counts. The State Fire Marshal explains the scope.
Does a gas fireplace replacement need a permit in Rockford?
Installing or replacing a heating appliance needs a mechanical permit in Rockford, and a gas insert is one. Loves Park lists mechanical work among its permitted work. Call your building office before you swap a unit.
