Does a gas fireplace need to be cleaned?
Updated
Short answer
Part of Gas Fireplace Service.

Gas is cleaner than wood, so the creosote cleaning that wood fireplaces need mostly does not apply. What does apply is the vent, the burner and the carbon monoxide risk. The gas fireplace service page covers booking one; this guide explains why.
What Nicor and the Product Safety Commission say
Nicor Gas, the Rockford area gas utility
“Keep your natural gas appliances and equipment maintained and in good working order by having them cleaned and/or inspected for safety once a year by a certified natural gas contractor/HVAC technician.”
Nicor adds that a yellow or orange flame can mean poor combustion or venting, and that blocked vents can let carbon monoxide into the home. Nicor does not publish a gas-fireplace-specific page, so this is its general advice for gas appliances, which includes a gas fireplace. The Consumer Product Safety Commission goes further, and its list names the equipment:
CPSC
“schedule a yearly professional inspection of all fuel-burning home heating systems, including furnaces, boilers, fireplaces, wood stoves, water heaters, chimneys, flues and vents.”
What a gas fireplace service usually covers
The scope depends on the company. Ask for it in writing. A typical visit looks at the burner and pilot, the logs or glass, the controls, and the venting. The vent is the part that matters most for safety. A gas insert in an old masonry chimney relies on a liner for exhaust, and a gas fireplace may vent through a pipe or through the chimney. In either case an obstruction or a crack can push exhaust into the room.
Signs a gas fireplace needs attention before the yearly visit: a yellow or orange flame, soot on the glass or logs, a smell of gas, a pilot that keeps going out, a carbon monoxide alarm that sounds. If you smell gas or an alarm sounds, leave the house and call for help. Do not use the fireplace again until it has been serviced.
The carbon monoxide law
Illinois Carbon Monoxide Alarm Detector Act
“Every dwelling unit shall be equipped with at least one approved carbon monoxide alarm in an operating condition within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping purposes.”
The State Fire Marshal says the law applies to homes that burn fossil fuel, natural gas included, to cook, heat or make hot water, or that have an attached garage. A gas fireplace is one more fossil-fuel appliance in a home that already needs the alarms. See the Illinois CO alarm law guide.
Why it matters in Rockford
83.5% of Winnebago County homes heat with gas (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024), and 22.4% of Rockford homes were built before 1940. Many gas fireplaces and inserts here sit in or beside old masonry chimneys. When a gas appliance is added or changed, CSIA recommends a Level 2 inspection, since the conditions of use are changing. Rockford's Property Standards also require every fuel-burning appliance to connect to an approved chimney or vent, which is where a liner comes in. See do I need a chimney liner.
What it costs
No cost guide publishes a Rockford price. Angi puts gas fireplace maintenance at $80 to $130 (Angi, chimney sweep cost, national, updated July 10, 2026). HomeGuide prices a gas fireplace chimney cleaning at $80 to $150 (HomeGuide, chimney sweep cost, national, updated February 9, 2026). Angi's repair guide lists an annual fireplace inspection at $75 to $125 (Angi, fireplace and wood stove repair cost, national, updated July 9, 2026). All ranges are on the chimney cost page.
Who does the service
Nicor says a certified natural gas contractor or HVAC technician. Many chimney companies service gas fireplaces too. Ask whether the technician handles the burner as well as the vent. Illinois has no state chimney sweep license that we found, so ask for proof of insurance and for what the visit includes. The hiring guide has the checklist.

Quick answers
How often should a gas fireplace be serviced?
Once a year. Nicor Gas advises having gas appliances cleaned or inspected once a year by a certified natural gas contractor or HVAC technician.
How much does gas fireplace service cost?
National ranges run roughly $75 to $150 depending on the guide. Each range with its source and date is on the cost page, and no guide publishes a Rockford price.
Why is my gas fireplace flame yellow or orange?
Nicor Gas says a yellow or orange flame can mean poor combustion or venting. Turn it off and have it serviced. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm with a gas fireplace?
Illinois law requires an alarm within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping in homes that burn fossil fuel to cook, heat or make hot water, or that have an attached garage. A gas fireplace sits in that setting.
Can a gas fireplace be vented into an old chimney?
A gas insert or log set can use a masonry chimney when the flue is sized and lined for it. CSIA recommends a Level 2 inspection when an appliance is added or changed.
