Sweeping and cleaning
How often should a chimney be swept?
Once a year is the standard advice. NFPA 211 says chimneys, fireplaces and vents get inspected at least once a year, with cleaning and repairs done if necessary, and the U.S. Fire Administration says to have the chimney inspected and cleaned each year by a professional. The guide on sweep frequency covers light use and gas.
How much does a chimney sweep cost in Rockford?
No cost guide publishes a Rockford, Chicago or Illinois chimney price (Angi's Chicago pages return 404, and HomeGuide and Thumbtack have none), so every range on this site is a national figure and is labelled that way. Angi puts a sweep at $129 to $381 with an average of $254, and HomeGuide gives $150 to $375. The cost page shows every guide with its date.
When is the best time of year to sweep?
October through March. Chimney swifts are protected by federal law, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says to clean outside nesting and roosting season, which for most of the country means between September or October and March or April. The seasonal guide has the details.
Does a gas fireplace or furnace flue need sweeping?
The vent can still be blocked or damaged. Nicor Gas tells customers to have gas appliances cleaned or inspected once a year, and a gas fireplace service runs $80 to $130 on Angi's sweep guide (cost page). See gas fireplace service and the gas fireplace cleaning guide.
What is creosote, and why does it matter?
Creosote is the tar and soot a wood fire leaves in the flue. According to NFPA, via EPA, a dirty chimney was the leading factor in home heating fires, at 30%, though the sheet does not give a data year. The stages and removal are on the creosote removal page, and the removal guide explains each stage.
Can I sweep my own chimney?
Many owners try it with a brush kit. A brush clears deposits but does not tell you the condition of the liner or the crown, and the U.S. Fire Administration advises a professional each year. The do-it-yourself guide lays out the pros and cons.
Inspections
What is the difference between a sweep and an inspection?
A sweep removes soot and creosote. An inspection looks at the condition of the chimney, the flue and the connection to the appliance. A Level 1 inspection, the CSIA minimum when nothing has changed, includes a check that the flue is clear of blockages and combustible deposits, so the two overlap. The comparison guide sorts out which one you are buying.
What do Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 inspections cover?
Level 1 covers the accessible parts inside and out. Level 2 adds attics, crawl spaces and basements and a video scan of the flue. Level 3 can open up the chimney or the building to reach a hidden problem. Angi's sweep guide gives $160 to $300, $260 to $460 and $500 to $800 (national; see the cost page). Details are on chimney inspection.
Do I need an inspection when buying or selling a house?
CSIA recommends a Level 2 inspection when a property is sold. That matters here: 22.4% of Rockford's housing units were built before 1940, and an old chimney can look fine from the yard. See the home sale guide and the Level 2 price.
What should I do after a chimney fire?
Do not use the fireplace or stove until the chimney has been checked. CSIA recommends a Level 2 inspection after a chimney fire, a storm or another event that could have damaged the chimney. The warning signs guide lists what a chimney fire looks and sounds like.
Repairs and costs
Why do chimney prices differ so much between guides?
Each guide surveys different jobs and different markets, and Angi's own sweep and inspection pages disagree on Level 2, at $260 to $460 against $200 to $1,000. The site shows both rather than picking one. The cost page lists every row with its source and date.
Are old Rockford chimneys more likely to need repair?
Age alone does not decide a chimney's condition, but the setting is hard on masonry. Rockford's median home was built in 1963, 46.5% of its housing predates 1960, January averages 21.8 F and the year has 6,497 heating degree days (NWS, 1991 to 2020). Brick takes years of freeze and thaw. See chimney repair and housing age by town.
How much does tuckpointing cost?
Angi's masonry guide puts tuckpointing at $500 to $2,500, and HomeGuide lists $150 to $500 for a small crack and $1,000 to $3,500 for spalling brick. All are national figures (see the cost page). The repair vs rebuild guide shows when repointing stops being enough.
How much does a chimney cap cost?
Angi gives $190 to $650 installed, with an average of $300. No cost guide we reviewed prices a chase cover on its own, so get that as a written quote. Prices are on the cost page; the cap guide explains what a cap does, and caps and chase covers covers installs.
What does crown repair cost?
Angi lists $175 to $600 to reseal, $300 to $2,200 to repair and $1,800 to $3,000 to replace (national, cost page). The crown is the concrete slab on top of the masonry; the cap is the metal cover. The crown vs cap guide separates them, and the work is on the crown repair page.
What does a chimney liner cost, and do I need one?
Angi puts a liner at $1,500 to $5,000 with an average of $2,500. HomeGuide lists $900 to $3,800 for stainless and $2,000 to $7,000 for clay or cast-in-place (cost page). Whether you need one depends on the appliance and the flue's condition; the liner guide and chimney liners walk through it.
What does it cost to stop a chimney leak?
Angi lists flashing at $400 to $1,600 with an average of $1,000, and HomeGuide lists sealing and waterproofing at $160 to $420 (national; cost page). Water can come from the flashing, the crown, the cap or the brick. Start with chimney leak repair and the leak guide.
What does a chimney rebuild or removal cost?
Angi's masonry guide gives $1,000 to $5,000 for a partial rebuild and HomeGuide gives $4,000 to $15,000 for full replacement (cost page). No approved guide prices chimney removal on its own, so ask for an itemized written quote. See rebuilds and removal.
Gas and stoves
Does my furnace or water heater use the chimney?
It can. 83.5% of Winnebago County homes heat with gas, and a gas furnace or water heater may vent through a masonry chimney. A liner sized for the appliance is part of that. The furnace and water heater liner guide covers it, and the liner page is here.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm?
Illinois requires a working alarm within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping. The State Fire Marshal says the law applies to homes that burn fossil fuel, natural gas included, to cook, heat or make hot water, or that have an attached garage. See the alarm law guide.
How much does a wood stove or pellet stove service cost?
Angi's sweep guide lists $150 to $300 for a wood stove and $130 to $200 for a pellet stove. Installing a stove runs $1,500 to $4,000 on Angi's installation page, with an average of $3,000. All figures are national (cost page). See stove and insert service.
Can a fireplace be a home's only heat in Rockford?
Not in the city. Rockford's Property Standards say a fireplace or wood-burning appliance cannot be a building's primary heat source, and that fuel-burning appliances must connect to an approved chimney or vent. The Rockford page quotes the rule and links the source.
Safety and local rules
Are there birds or animals in my chimney, and what can I do?
Chimney swifts are protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so harming the birds, eggs or nests is illegal. They are common summer residents in Illinois and begin migrating in September. Raccoons and squirrels are different. HomeGuide lists animal removal at $600 to $1,500 (cost page). See animal and bird removal and the swift guide.
Do I need a permit for chimney work in Rockford?
It depends on the job. Rockford requires a permit to repair or alter a structure larger than 120 square feet but does not say either way for chimney work, and installing a stove, insert or gas insert needs a mechanical permit. Call Construction and Development Services at (779) 348-7158 before a rebuild or new liner. Other towns differ; see the service area.
Are there special chimney rules in Rockford's historic districts?
On a landmark or in a local historic district, exterior changes visible from the street need a Certificate of Appropriateness before the building permit. The 2024 Design Guidelines say original chimneys should not be removed or altered and should be repointed to match. Read the historic district guide.
Can I burn wood outdoors or in a fire pit in Winnebago County?
It varies by town. Rockford does not allow open burning or campfires, while Rockton's code expressly allows wood in domestic fireplaces and allows campfires. Every town's rule is in the burning table on the service area page, and the outdoor burning guide explains it.
How common are chimney fires?
NFPA counted an average of 44,210 home fires a year caused by heating equipment in 2016 to 2020, with about 480 deaths a year. The U.S. Fire Administration found that fires confined to chimneys, flues or fuel burners were 77% of residential heating fires in 2017 to 2019. January is the peak month. See creosote removal.
Hiring and how this site works
Does Illinois license chimney sweeps?
We found no state chimney sweep or chimney contractor license. Illinois does not license general contractors, though a city or village may require a permit or registration. Roofers are state licensed, which matters when flashing is part of the job. The hiring guide covers what to check instead.
What must a chimney contract include?
On any job over $1,000, the Home Repair and Remodeling Act requires a signed written contract or work order with the total cost, the parts and materials listed with reasonable particularity and any charge for an estimate. The contractor must give you the "Home Repair: Know Your Consumer Rights" pamphlet before you sign. The Act names chimneys and chimney liners.
Does the sweep or contractor need insurance?
The Illinois Attorney General says the Act requires public liability and property damage insurance. We did not retrieve the statute section itself, so ask for proof and check the Attorney General's page. The hiring guide lists red flags.
Who answers my request?
We reply. This site is published by N5 Studio and no company has been confirmed to do the work in your area yet. Nothing is booked until you have agreed to a written price. Send the details on the quote page.
Why does the site show ranges instead of prices?
No cost guide publishes a Rockford, Chicago or Illinois chimney price (Angi's Chicago pages return 404, and HomeGuide and Thumbtack have none), so every range on this site is a national figure and is labelled that way. Each range here has its source and date, and the price that counts is the one in your written contract. Chase covers and glazed creosote removal have no published price at all. See the cost page.
