Can You Clean a Dryer Vent Yourself?
Updated
Short answer
Part of Dryer Vent Cleaning.

No safety source we read says a homeowner may not clean a dryer vent. The CPSC explains how to clear a blockage. Samsung prints a full set of steps while recommending a professional. This guide gives both sides: what the published steps are, what they ask of you, and the cases where paying for the job makes more sense. We do not sell kits here and we did not find a dated price for one from an approved source, so none is quoted. The paid service is on our dryer vent cleaning page.
What the published steps ask you to do
The CPSC’s safety alert is brief. It says to check the outside vent while the dryer runs, and then:
CPSC, Publication 5022
“To remove a blockage in the exhaust path, it may be necessary to disconnect the exhaust duct from the dryer. Remember to reconnect the ducting to the dryer and outside vent before using the dryer again.”
Samsung’s page gives a longer procedure. Its first step reads: “First, if you have a gas dryer, turn off the gas and unplug the dryer from its power source.” Its last step is to turn the gas back on if you have a gas dryer. Before that, it has you inspect the duct and replace it if it is damaged. Its tool list is a vent cleaning kit with a brush, extension rods and adapters for a drill and a vacuum, plus a drill, a screwdriver, a vacuum, pliers and tape.
Samsung is also direct about who should do it: “a professional vent cleaning service is recommended. However, if you are determined to do it yourself, please use the following tips and steps.” The U.S. Fire Administration says the dryer’s interior and venting “should be serviced and cleaned periodically by qualified service personnel.”
Reasons to do it yourself
- The vent is short and easy to reach. A basement or first-floor wall vent is the lowest price tier at the cleaning companies, which tells you it is the easiest case.
- You are checking, not cleaning. The flap check and the lint screen are yours either way. The CPSC says to do them.
- You want to start from a known state between professional visits, which the intervals in how often to clean a dryer vent may call for.
- Cost. A professional visit is national average money, not a Rockford price: Angi lists $104 to $188 (updated October 14, 2026) and Thumbtack $186 to $510. See the cost page. Doing it yourself saves that charge.
Reasons to hire it out
A gas dryer
Samsung’s first step is to shut off the gas. GE warns not to run a gas dryer without its vent because of carbon monoxide fumes, which also means you should not run a gas dryer with the duct disconnected to see what happens. If you are not comfortable with the gas line and the shutoff, that is a reason to hand the job over. The U.S. Fire Administration separately says to have a gas dryer inspected annually by a professional “to ensure that the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks.” That is about the gas connection, not the vent.
A roof or second-floor vent
Angi breaks its price out by location: by vent location, a basement or first-floor vent $80 to $150, second floor $110 to $185, roof $150 to $250 (Angi, national, updated October 14, 2026). The top of the range sits at roof vents. Angi attributes the spread to the vent’s location, its total length and the number of turns. The Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center says to avoid ending a duct at the roof where possible, and that a long or angled run may be better rerouted. If your vent climbs, the pros charge more for a reason, and a ladder and a roof are part of it.
A long run with turns
The International Residential Code lets a dryer exhaust run up to 35 feet from the dryer connection to the outside, reduced for each elbow (a 4-inch mitered 90 degree elbow counts as 5 feet). So a legal run can be long and bent. No source we read says how far a kit’s rods reach, and the kit’s own packaging is the place to check before you start. The code details are in dryer vent code rules for Illinois.
Foil, plastic or damaged duct
The CPSC says to replace plastic or foil accordion duct with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal, because the flexible kind “can more easily trap lint and is more susceptible to kinks or crushing.” Samsung says to replace a damaged duct. A replacement is a separate job from a cleaning. HomeGuide prices replacement at $100 to $300 (national, written January 5, 2026), and Angi lists $80 to $1,000 for a damaged vent. Animal nests add $120 to $250 on Angi’s page.
You do not know what is in the wall
A duct that runs inside a wall or ceiling cannot be fully seen. Whirlpool’s Check Vent page says that cleaning the venting inside the house “may require a Vent Cleaning service person, depending on the venting.”
What a professional does that a kit cannot
Here we have to be careful, because no source we read says a professional’s method cleans better than a good DIY job. What the sources do support is narrower:
- Samsung and the U.S. Fire Administration both recommend a professional or qualified service personnel.
- The CPSC says a qualified service person should clean the interior of the dryer chassis periodically. A vent kit does not reach there.
- Angi lists nest, fur and dropping removal as an extra service, and a vent guard as a separate product.
- The Chimney Safety Institute of America runs a Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician credential. It describes itself as the only nationally recognized credential for dryer vent cleaning. Illinois has no dryer vent license that we found. Ask any company you hire whether the person doing the work holds a current credential. We make no claim about anyone ourselves. Our hiring guide covers the contract questions.
If you do it yourself
- Unplug the dryer. For a gas dryer, shut off the gas first, as Samsung says.
- Pull the dryer out far enough to reach the duct, taking care with the gas line.
- Disconnect the duct from the dryer, as the CPSC says may be needed.
- Clean the duct from both ends with the kit, then clean the outside cap.
- Inspect the duct. Replace it if it is damaged, crushed or foil.
- Reconnect the duct to the dryer and the outside vent before you use the dryer, which the CPSC says to do.
- Turn the gas back on if you shut it off, then run the dryer and check the outside flap opens and air escapes.
That is a sequence assembled from the CPSC and Samsung steps, not a procedure either one publishes in this order. Follow the instruction book for your model where it differs. The inside of the dryer and the lint screen are still on the list. If the flap does not open after you finish, see signs your dryer vent is clogged.

Quick answers
Is it safe to clean a dryer vent yourself?
The CPSC explains how to clear a blockage by disconnecting the duct and reconnecting it before use. Samsung publishes steps but recommends a professional, and tells gas dryer owners to shut off the gas first.
Do I need to turn off the gas first?
Samsung's first step is to turn off the gas and unplug the dryer if you have a gas dryer, and its last step is to turn the gas back on. GE warns not to run a gas dryer without its vent.
What should I check after I reconnect the vent?
The CPSC says to reconnect the ducting to the dryer and the outside vent before you use the dryer again. Then run the dryer and check that the outside flap opens and exhaust air escapes.
Why does a roof or second-floor vent cost more to clean?
Angi gives separate ranges by location: by vent location, a basement or first-floor vent $80 to $150, second floor $110 to $185, roof $150 to $250. It says vent location, total length and the number of turns drive the spread. These are national figures. See the cost page for the source.
Does Illinois license dryer vent cleaners?
We found no Illinois license for dryer vent cleaning. The Illinois Attorney General's contractor guide says general contractors are not required to be licensed or certified. The Chimney Safety Institute of America runs a voluntary Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician credential.
